Prologue

I’d always liked it rough—hands on my throat, push me up against the wall, hold me down rough. Not very many men are strong enough and confident enough to be able to fuck me properly, and I knew that. There had always been this longing in me, this want in me to have more, to push my limits harder, and I had to discover where that led.

You’d be shocked to hear I am a Catholic School girl. Yep. White knee socks, penny loafers, plaid skirt and everything. Going to mass every Wednesday was where I learned to spend time on my knees. Shortly after that, I learned about the power that I held over men in this seemingly submissive state. I learned how to give amazing head; it was like studying for a test and then doing the lab work. And, I promise you, there was never a lack of voluntary lab partners.

The mower was loud, echoing through the window, over and over, up and down, but my moaning was louder. Uncontrollable sounds forced from a place I had just recently discovered, edging closer to orgasm, and then expertly, he withheld. The delicious frustration was sexy as hell.

He was in my ear, whispering deeply, “I know what you need, and I am going to give it to you, and then you are going to come for your Master.” His hand was on my throat, slowing the air, intensifying the building fullness. I craved his hands there, knowing the danger was part of what made it so hot.

“You need to be quiet. They are going to hear you. See how they keep coming back? They can hear something. They just don’t know it’s a gorgeous blonde tied up in my bed.”

It had been two years of sexual exploration. Meeting James was the catalyst of it all. We enjoyed our playtime together and I got an education, but, eventually, his interests and mine didn’t line up any more and we drifted apart. I have nothing but fond, tormenting memories. Since then, I’ve explored this side of myself with other willing partners.

I needed it, and the more I needed it, the lower I found my standards. I’m not ashamed to admit there were a couple of stragglers in there, a few uglies that I’d like to forget, but I am who I am.

I had found a place for my pain, but the pain I craved was the only door to pleasure for me. Sure, I’d had good sex, even great sex of the vanilla variety, but nothing ever came as close to ecstasy or made me come so hard as BDSM did.

In this feministic world we now live in, there doesn’t seem to be a place for me. A natural submissive. Yet, here I am. I currently live in a world where women are fighting for their rights, deep into the #metoo movement, and choosing not to denude their bodies. On purpose. The visuals of wiry black hair pouring out of armpits and the return of the 70s bushes actually make me a little sick. But I am a tolerant person, and it’s not my way to criticize how other people live their lives. Maybe I feel that way because I don’t want to be criticized for my proclivities or my lack of love for the feminist agenda.

I wasn’t looking for a relationship, so Tinder was the perfect place for me. Relationships were more trouble than they were worth. Conforming your day to day activities around another person? I’m submissive, but I’m not stupid. Two years before, a chance swipe right brought James into my life. He was my first proper Dom, and we explored so many dark fantasies together. The days we spent together, even now, have reached greatest hits status in my spank bank. Yes, girls have spank banks. We’re allowed to, and fuck you for thinking otherwise.

Maybe I am kind of a feminist, after all. I love sex. It’s neck and neck with sugar, my other vice. Sex is just as satisfying, but until James, there was this itch I could never scratch. This elusive thing wanted but never asked for. This deep craving, which I was inching closer and closer to satisfying without even knowing.

Aimee 2019

They say you should have three hobbies to be successful in life. One to make you money, one to keep you in shape, and one to be creative. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My dad instilled this in me from a very young age, growing and selling homegrown tomatoes from our yard every summer starting when I was seven. Work ethic I have in spades, another gift from being brought up by a Marine. OOO RAH!

To this day, I love a military man. A man who is committed to something outside of himself? So hot. In uniform? Even hotter.

I skipped the traditional track. No brick and mortar four-year college for me. Not because I wasn’t smart enough, but because I didn’t value it enough and longed to be on my own. I left my childhood home at seventeen when Mom and I had a disagreement about the boy I was dating. The boy disappeared a week after I moved into my rat-infested, shitty apartment, the only kind that a seventeen-year-old can find with no credit history. Still, I was happy there, living on ramen and fruit punch, the highest of all fructose-laced drinks, the ridiculously red kind you get in a gallon jug at the supermarket. I’d drink half of it, then fill it with a bottle of gin and repeat.

I’m a creative in a world where creatives are undervalued, sometimes not valued at all. My photography degree was worthless, a useless vanity degree now that the invasion of digital imaging spawned a new photographer popping up every seven seconds. I was living with a boyfriend, not because I loved him, but out of convenience. In exchange for blow jobs, I was able to live rent free, and this arrangement was acceptable until it wasn’t. I can’t go into that right now. But it was ugly and it left a mark.

So, at the middlest-aged part of my life, I found myself unemployed, a single mother, in a world that didn’t value my skills anymore, without a safety net (otherwise known as a man) to take care of me. With nowhere to be and nothing to do, I was afraid. I was looking for something. I was surprised when it found me. “Love what you do, and you’ll never work a day in your life.” That’s what everyone always says. So, I found myself sitting at a dirty wooden bar, drawing two columns on a napkin and brainstorming the next step.

Two old fashioneds in. (Yes, I am a whiskey drinker.) The only things on my list were sex, cheesecake, and Japanese culture. I felt incredibly unskilled in a world that prioritized math and science. Why did the big guy hit me so hard with the creative hammer? If only I had a love for banking or selling insurance, but both of those realities gave me the willies and would have resulted in my slow death. Boredom was something I was terrified of more than eking out an existence. I would always find a way to survive; I was exceptionally good at it. But boredom? That would make me destructive. I knew that. My past had taught me as much, so I was vigilant in keeping my boredom at bay.

Do you believe in fate? Do you believe in source energy and the law of attraction? I eat that shit up with a spoon. I developed a cult-like fascination with Abraham Hicks, and devoured his teachings, brought to you through a medium known as Esther, an elderly woman who spoke about herself in the third person. I hesitate to tell people I listen to those because that’s when the word “crazy” gets thrown around. I like to think I am open-minded.

So, when sitting in that bar, overhearing the woes of girlfriends suffering through missionary sex two nights a week to earn the latest Coach bag, a delicious seed of an idea was planted. In my slightly drunken state, the idea of introducing adventurous couples to the basics of BDSM using a ‘house party’ home demonstration model was bordering on genius. Piggy-backing on the mainstream success of 50 Shades of Grey, we discovered people were more open-minded in the boudoir than originally thought. On that night, in that shitty dive bar, the idea of an internet forum called Velvet Guild was born. It was both my finest moment and, eventually, my greatest nightmare, as you will learn. A burst of brilliance, an idea so fresh and cutting edge I got carpal tunnel from patting myself on the back. I was a fucking genius, and finally, I was going to thrive, not just survive.

5.0 out of 5 stars   Finally - the reality of BDSM    Can I just type 'Love it' 100 times? Cause I do! Can't wait to read the next installments. This book illustrated BDSM on a real level - the facts. Not abuse and "freakish", but the emotions, the power, the deep enjoyment from things that don't necessarily have to be painful. Great stuff!

5.0 out of 5 stars  Fantastic Fantasy!   Wow! This is what the world needs right now! Excellent storytelling, racy subject matter, fantasy and fun! I could not stop reading and can’t wait for the next episode. Ninya is a gifted writer and I look forward to seeing how this story develops. Give me MORE!

5.0 out of 5 stars  This review is long so, if you aren't interested in the rest, I ADORE this series! The thing about reviews is they are always subjective. It doesn’t really matter that I like a book if what you like is different. For that reason, I am going to share a bit about me.

1. I have 19 years in the lifestyle, am both a service and bedroom submissive, and have been with my Master for five years.
2. I loved The Secretary, thought the Beauty series was ridiculous but fun, have a favorite scene in O (pillars feature prominently!), and wish I could live in the Marketplace (can I be Robin please?)
3. I think Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns; Conquer Me; and SM 101 should be mandatory reading.
4. I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE both book and movie versions of 50 Shades as well as the movie, The Pet. Not only are they HORRIBLE representations of something very much NOT lifestyle, they are dangerous to follow. I am not a fan of using the word literally for everything, but they are LITERALLY DANGEROUS!
5. I am not a big fan of serials. I don’t tend to watch TV shows until there are several seasons out (or they all drop at once, blessings to Netflix). I want my story NOW. I don’t want to have to wait until next week much less next MONTH!

With that out of the way…

I came across Velvet Guild when Episode Three was about to come out because Amazon and Goodreads both thought I would find it interesting. It related these books to 50 Shades (which I think does Velvet Guild a great disservice), and for that reason alone, I passed. I had a brief glimmer of hope but was afraid of being let down yet again.

When Episode Four came out, I saw a review that said Velvet Guild was a “…terrific explanation of the BDSM lifestyle…”. Remembering how crushed I was after the same B.S. for The Pet and 50 Shades, again, I passed. I did, however, sign up for Ninya’s newsletter, thinking I might get a better sense of who she was and what she did or did not know. My desire for relatable reading material being stronger than my self-preservation, apparently.

When Episode Five was about to come out, it happened to coincide with my considering trying Kindle Unlimited. When I saw all the episodes were free on KU, I figured I would risk my heart (but not my money).

I reluctantly read the first episode, then I read the second, then discovered my husband was waking up as I finished Episode Five.

Then I went and bought them outright, and preordered what Amazon would let me.

Holy Shit!

The characters had qualities I have OR people I know have. I related with not one or two but several characters. I have felt the feelings Ninya describes, and feel her words were sometimes precisely what I might have said. I identify with the silence Aimee talks about. I identify with the life and struggles and choices of the single mother.
I would give just about anything to play with Jagger (who is admittedly too good to be true but is MUCH better than the sexy billionaire trope ::insert gagging noises here::). I sense the danger in some situations before the author reveals it, because we have all dealt with one of THOSE “true dom” nutjobs.

I love that this story talks about the different ways people might find and live this lifestyle, and NONE of them are because someone was abused as a child, or tricked, or kidnapped, or somehow working out their mental health issues.

I love that the books show both sides, and can’t wait until other facets are included (I sense them coming!) to see those facets shine through as just as valid as the “sex play” parts.

I love that the scenes are realistic, (no hanging anally from protrusions on a wall) sexy, and aren’t filled with ridiculous euphemisms for the human body.

I love the sense of weaving, how you just know some of the stories will come together, but without being slapped in the face with it. Little hints here are there, until you see the threads pulling together. It is delicious.

Finally, I love that it is well written. I am not stumbling over lousy writing, poor grammar, and sloppy punctuation. As both a writer and an editor, so much of what COULD be fun or interesting ends up being a chore to slog my way through. The author is obviously early in her career (and still learning the voices of her characters), but she is increasing her skill in leaps and bounds. As far as whomever her editor is… I may need to hire them myself!

I hate that it is a serial.

Overall, if you are in the lifestyle, interested in the lifestyle, or interested in hot scenes with an actual plot, these are for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Naughty    Very well written, great characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars Continue to grow    Am enjoying seeing the characters grow and develop. The down to earth and straight format keeps me reading. Thanks for your hard work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!    I couldn’t put this book down! Keeps you wanting to read more. The ending about did me in with the ‘to be continued’. Cant wait for the next series!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can’t put this book down!     Love, love, love the fast paced writing, it keeps you engaged and wanting more. The characters are developed slowly and methodically, in a strategic timeline to give you just enough information and also keep you wanting to learn more about them. Each episode gives bursts of eye opening, jaw dropping steaminess, but then brings you right back into the everyday lives of these characters and their relationships. This series is so good I never want it to end!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally hooked now     Ok now I’m hooked! I enjoyed the first installment enough to go ahead with book 2 , but now I want it in sets. It’s addictive, high-octane, hot and steamy fun. The different storylines all showcasing unique lifestyles work well together. It’s an excellent representation of the best lifestyle- something for everyone. This is definitely a winning combination.

5.0 out of 5 stars   Definitely hooked!     Pre-ordered the next one. Really enjoying this series and can't wait for the next installment. Love the concept of a school of BDSM, too. Great character development as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars    Riveting example of BDSM!     The author gives a terrific explanation of the BDSM lifestyle. It is an awesome read. Well written, informative and hot. I loved it. Greatly anticipating Velvet Guild 2. Although it is extremely well written I find it difficult to endorse the price of the book considering the limited number of pages. That said, it is a super read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful character development    Thoughtful character development that is usually lacking in this type of romance novel. Also keeps a breakneck pace that has the reader on the edge of her seat the whole time. Even people with little patience for reading will be enthralled. Ninya takes you into a new world where the woman is finally empowered to be the leader in a BDSM relationship, instead of a weak, innocent, doe-eyed dolt.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Love the idea of the serialized novel — I’ve pre-ordered the 2nd “Episode”!     The most important thing to know about this story is that it is well-written, with developed characters, good dialogue and an interesting premise and plot. Because (let’s be honest), I wouldn’t necessarily expect those things from most self-published erotica. This author has chosen a unique approach to a niche genre and she has knocked it out of the park. I’ve pre-ordered the next Episode!

5.0 out of 5 stars   Great first work!    A page turner! Intriguing characters! Effortless to read which is appreciated these days! Ninya showed she can write and that she has a continuing future as an author.

5.0 out of 5 stars      Hooked after the first pages!     Very well written with interesting characters. As soon as I was done reading, I immediately ordered the next episode!

5.0 out of 5 stars       Great story!     I really enjoyed the story. It wasn’t based around the racy stuff, following the characters through very interesting and real situations makes this series a real page-turner. The style of writing really lends itself to the pace of the story, and welcome reading many more!
